Cohen was born into a Conservative Jewish family in Tehran, Iran. His father is a businessman and his mother is a homemaker. Following the Iranian revolution in 1979 and subsequent discrimination against Jews, he escaped Iran through the Kavir Desert in Southeast Iran (considered one of the most hostile climates in the world) and became a refugee at the United Nations in Pakistan. He ultimately was able to reach the United States through the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in Austria at the age of 19.
